Officers stated they were contacted by a man who discovered a car in Hanau marked with reddish fluid

Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then located multiple other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state initial examinations show the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.

Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have requested to the community for information.

A senior official stated the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.

"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
